چکیده

This paper presents a novel framework of motion compensated pre&ction(MCP) techniques in the wavelet domain for high performance video coding. Our analysis reveals fundamental limitations with previous ad-hoc wavelet-based video coders from motion accuracy point of view. We demonstrate that the phase associated with any wavelet transform carries critical information of the motion accuracy and propose to restore the motion accuracy by considering the wavelet coefficients of the previous frame with all different phases. Our all-phase MCP approach can be viewed as predicting the wavelet coefficients from an over-complete expansion of the previous frame. Experiment results have shown that restoration of motion accuracy in the wavelet domain can dramatically improve the efficiency of MCP. The video coder(MCP-WT) built upon MCP of wavelet coefficients has achieved 2-3dB gain over existing MPEG-2 coder at the bit rate of 1-9Mbps. Moreover, MCP techniques in the wavelet domain offer a promising new ground for developing efficient scalable video coders.

Scalable video compression via overcomplete motion compensated wavelet coding

Recently, there have been a flurry of works on overcomplete motion compensated wavelet coding (OMCWC). In this paper, we address the importance of phase and focus on the design of scalable video coding algorithms within the OMCWC framework. Specifically, our new contributions consist of the following three components: 1) efficient block motion estimation techniques in the wavelet domain includi...

3D video coding using redundant-wavelet multihypothesis and motion-compensated temporal filtering

A video coder is presented that combines mesh-based motion-compensated temporal filtering, phase-diversity multihypothesis motion compensation, and an embedded 3D wavelet-coefficient coder. The key contribution of this work is the introduction of the phasediversity multihypothesis paradigm into motion-compensated temporal filtering, which is achieved by deploying temporal filtering in the domai...

Embedded-to-lossless coding of motion-compensated prediction residuals in lossless video coding

Lossless video coding is useful in applications where no loss of information or visual quality is tolerable. In embedded to lossless coding an encoded video stream can be decoded into any bit rate up to the lossless bit rate, which is quite useful in numerous applications. In this paper, the research we present is based on lossless video coding, which uses motion compensated prediction to elimi...

Motion Compensation and the Overcomplete Discrete Wavelet Transform

In this paper, a wavelet-based spatially scalable video coding scheme with in-band prediction is investigated. The discrete wavelet transform is employed for the spatial decomposition of each video frame. A blockwise motion compensated prediction is computed for the individual subbands. For motion compensation the shift-invariant overcomplete discrete wavelet transform is exploited to achieve h...

In-band Motion Estimation and Compensation for Spatially Scalable Predictive Wavelet Video Coding

A wavelet-based spatially scalable video coding scheme with in-band prediction is investigated. The wavelet decomposition of the video frames is followed by the computation of a blockwise motion compensated prediction for the individual subbands. The shift-invariant overcomplete wavelet transform is exploited to obtain half-pixel motion vector accuracy without the need of interpolation. JPEG 20...
